Current Projects

Ohio Union Reconstruction: I've been commissioned by The Ohio State University to document (in paintings) Ohio Union's upcoming transformation. The first painting in the series, "Ohio Union (1950-2007)", is complete and available as a print (see "Available In Print" this site or visit www.ohiounion.osu.edu). Other paintings will include previous unions Enarson Hall and Pomerene Hall as well as a series on deconstruction and reconstruction of the new Ohio Union at Ohio State. The paintings will be part of the new Ohio Union permanent collection. In addition, I'll be helping The Ohio Union staff and the Ohio Historical Society construct drawings for new bas-relief sculptures (which will be carved by another artist) and included with the original Ohio Union sculpture panels on the exterior of the new building. Identical in size and similar in style and theme to the original bas-relief sculptures, these panels will highlight aspects of Ohio history.

Walnut Hill Carriage Driving Competition 2008: Pittsford, NY. The painting for Walnut Hill's 2008 poster is in the works. Watch the site for this image which will be available in print by late Spring.

Images of New Orleans- Musicians, French Quarter, Mississippi River Wharfs: I'm working on a series from jillions of references I shot while in New Orleans May of 2006 and January 2008. The bulk of this series will be on exhibit in March 2009 at Sharon Weiss Gallery in the Short North of Columbus, Ohio.

The Sanctuary Project: Started November 2006.This posting: August 2007. The graphite drawing "Entanglement" is an evolving project. I hauled the 48" by 32" drawing around to different sacred spaces and worked on it (on the floor) in those places for nearly 8 months (on and off). Working inside different sanctuaries was a surprising adventure. The places I visited were chosen in a variety of ways inlcuding chance meetings, old connections, and help from friends and supporters. I have learned a bit about manmade sacred spaces and what they mean to the people who use them. I've also found some wonderful new friends. Pieces of my experiences and the individual church's stories are woven into this drawing. I worked in the following places:

North Congregational United Church of Christ, West Henderson Road, Columbus, OH. Sanctuary and Chapel

First Unitarian Universalist Church, Weisheimer Road, Columbus, OH

St. Sophia's Eastern Orthodox Cathedral, Indianola Avenue, Short North area, Columbus, OH

Karma Thegsum Choling Tibetan Buddhist Meditation Center, Grubb Street, Columbus, OH

The Church at Mill Run, Fishinger Road, Hilliard, OH

St. Paul's United Church of Christ, East Gates St., South German Village area, OH

St. John's Episcopal Church, West Town St. Columbus, OH

My home studio (sacred to me - and the best spot to finish and clean the piece before framing)

You can view "Entanglement" by visiting the "Drawing" or "Available In Print" section of this site. The reproduction is 20" by 16"and is signed and numbered (x/500). The prints sell for $38, with half of that amount going to the Early Childhood Development Center at Weinland Park. The Weinland Park campus is a joint effort between The Ohio State University and the Columbus Public School System. Opening August 2007, the center will serve children and their families in the economically challenged communities adjacent to Ohio State's Columbus campus. Programming will include both childhood education and family advocacy services. The center will be a hands-on training facility for early education majors at Ohio sate as well as a laboratory school researching best practices in the care and education of young children. The goal is not only to support growth and development of children in this neighborhood, but also to acquire and transfer knowledge of "what works" to schools in similar circumstances around the country. The potential impact of this program is wide ranging and long lasting. There are many worthy causes in this hurting world. My reasons for supporting this particular program are personal and relate to my time in the Weinland Park neighborhood while working on "Entanglement". I will always be grateful for the friendship and generosity I encountered there. I plan to visit and draw in sacred spaces again soon. My next project will be based on the circle.
